Interior Detailing Guide
A material-by-material guide to interior car detailing — the right products and techniques for every surface in your vehicle.
Every Material Needs Different Treatment
A modern car interior contains at least six different material types, each requiring specific products and techniques. Using the wrong cleaner on leather can strip its protective coating. Soaking Alcantara with water causes permanent marking. Harsh chemicals on piano black trim create micro-scratches. Understanding material differences is essential for safe and effective interior detailing.
Material-Specific Care
Plastic trim — Use an all-purpose cleaner at diluted strength with a soft brush. Dress with a matte or satin finish protectant to prevent UV fading.
Leather — Dedicated leather cleaner applied with a soft brush, followed by leather conditioner. Never use all-purpose cleaner on leather.
Alcantara/Suede — Brush gently with a suede brush to restore nap. Use a dedicated Alcantara cleaner sparingly. Never saturate.
Carpet and fabric — Vacuum first, then use a fabric cleaner with agitation and hot water extraction for deep cleaning.
Headliner — Work in small sections with a low-moisture cleaner and microfibre. Never saturate or scrub aggressively.
Glass — Use an automotive glass cleaner with a waffle-weave microfibre. Clean in two directions to identify streaks.
Piano black trim — Use a detailing spray and ultra-soft microfibre only. These surfaces scratch extremely easily.
The Interior Detailing Process
Always work top to bottom and from the cleanest areas to the dirtiest. Start with the headliner, then dashboard and upper trim, then seats, door cards, centre console, carpets, and finally the boot. This prevents dirty water and debris from contaminating already-cleaned areas. Steam cleaning is invaluable for sanitisation and reaching difficult crevices.
