How to Remove Car Odours
Identify the source, choose the right treatment, and eliminate car odours permanently — from smoke and pet smells to damp and food spills.
Identify the Source First
The most important step in odour removal is identifying the source. Masking a smell with air fresheners is temporary — the odour returns once the freshener fades. Common sources include: food spills trapped in seat fabric, pet dander in upholstery, cigarette smoke absorbed into headliner and seats, damp carpets from water leaks, and mould growing in hidden areas like under seats or in the ventilation system.
Odour Treatment by Type
Smoke odour — Requires ozone treatment. Smoke particles bond to every surface including the headliner. Deep steam cleaning followed by ozone generator treatment is the only effective solution.
Pet odour — Enzymatic cleaner breaks down organic compounds. Apply to affected areas, allow to dwell, then extract with a wet vacuum.
Food and drink spills — Locate and clean the spill area. Extract with hot water and upholstery cleaner. Baking soda paste can draw out remaining odour.
Damp and mould — Find and fix the water source. Remove and dry affected carpets. Treat with anti-mould cleaner. Check door seals and drainage holes.
General staleness — Full interior deep clean with steam, extraction, and ventilation system treatment. Often resolved by a thorough professional valet.
Professional Ozone Treatment
An ozone generator produces activated oxygen (O3) that oxidises odour-causing molecules, breaking them down at a molecular level. The car is sealed with the generator running for 30–60 minutes. This is the most effective treatment for severe or embedded odours, particularly cigarette smoke. It is safe for all interior materials when used correctly.
