Ceramic Coating Explained
Everything you need to know about ceramic coatings — the science behind SiO2 nanotechnology, how it protects your paint, and what to realistically expect.
What Is Ceramic Coating?
Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer applied to your vehicle's exterior surfaces that chemically bonds with the factory paint, creating a permanent or semi-permanent layer of protection. The active ingredient is silicon dioxide (SiO2) derived from quartz or sand. Once cured, it forms an incredibly hard, glass-like shell that is far more durable than traditional wax or sealant.
Key Properties of Ceramic Coating
Hydrophobic effect — water beads up and rolls off the surface, carrying dirt with it (self-cleaning effect)
UV resistance — blocks ultraviolet rays that cause paint oxidation and fading over time
Chemical resistance — protects against bird droppings, tree sap, acid rain, and road salt
Scratch resistance — harder than clear coat (9H hardness rating on professional grades)
Gloss enhancement — amplifies paint depth and clarity for a wet-look finish
Thermal resistance — withstands temperature extremes without degrading
Anti-static — reduces dust attraction compared to uncoated surfaces
How Is Ceramic Coating Applied?
Professional ceramic coating application is a multi-day process. The paint must first be machine-polished to remove all defects — the coating locks in whatever is underneath, so the surface must be flawless. After polishing, the surface is wiped with panel prep to remove oils. The coating is then applied drop by drop and levelled with a suede applicator, panel by panel. It requires 12–24 hours to cure in a controlled environment.
How Long Does Ceramic Coating Last?
Consumer-grade ceramic coatings last 1–2 years. Professional-grade coatings applied by trained detailers last 3–5 years, with some premium products offering up to 10 years of protection. Longevity depends on maintenance — regular pH-neutral washing, avoiding automatic car washes, and periodic top-up applications maximise the coating's lifespan.
What Ceramic Coating Cannot Do
Ceramic coating is not a miracle product. It does not prevent all scratches — it reduces their likelihood but a key scratch or trolley impact will still mark the surface. It does not eliminate the need to wash your car. It also does not replace paint protection film (PPF) for stone chip protection. Manage expectations and you will be delighted with the results.
