Parking Under Trees: Hidden Damage to Your Car
Sap, bird droppings, pollen and more — the hidden damage from parking under trees and how to prevent permanent paint damage.
The Hidden Cost of Shade
Parking under trees seems like a good idea — shade from the sun, a cooler car interior, and protection from hail. But the reality is that trees are one of the biggest threats to your car's paintwork. Tree sap, bird droppings, pollen, and even falling berries can cause serious and permanent damage to your car's clear coat if not addressed promptly.
Types of Tree-Related Damage
Tree sap — Extremely sticky and acidic. If left on paint in warm weather, sap etches into clear coat within 24–48 hours and can leave permanent marks.
Bird droppings — Highly acidic (uric acid). In direct sunlight, droppings can etch through clear coat in as little as 2 hours.
Pollen — Acidic when wet. Spring pollen that gets rained on creates an acidic film that bonds to paint and causes etching.
Berry stains — Berries from trees like rowans contain pigments that stain light-coloured paint permanently if not removed quickly.
Aphid honeydew — A sticky substance secreted by aphids on overhanging branches. Creates a tacky film that attracts further contamination.
Emergency Removal Tips
If you find sap, droppings or other tree contamination on your car, act quickly. For bird droppings, soak with a wet microfibre cloth for 60 seconds before gently lifting — never scrub. For tree sap, use a dedicated sap remover or isopropyl alcohol on a microfibre pad. For pollen, rinse the car with water before touching the surface to avoid scratching. The golden rule: never rub dry contamination across your paint.
